New Topeka ice cream shop, The Sweet Tee, opened in early June – The Topeka Capital-Journal

Topeka has a new option for ice cream  in southeast Topeka.

The particular Sweet Tee, 2841 S. E. Croco Road, opened in early June, serving homemade, hand-scooped ice cream.

A business venture from partners Matt and Sarah Vanderpool and Mike and JoAnna Vance, The Sweet Tee shares an adjoining suite with 8 Iron Therapy, an indoor simulated golf course, which opened in August under the same ownership.

“We opened 8 Iron Therapy because my husband loves golf, ” said Sarah Vanderpool. “We had a batter’s box, which was the original idea for the space next door. ”

After much discussion, they decided that there were enough indoor batting opportunities in Topeka. Other ideas included a coffee shop or activity space for yoga and other fitness classes.

Then one night, Vanderpool said she was eating a bowl of ice cream while the couple discussed the future of their new business.

‘What do you really love? ‘

“My husband said: ‘We opened 8 Iron because I love golf. What do you really love?, ’”  Vanderpool said,   “and I said, ‘Ice cream. ‘”

Featuring made-from-scratch-in-store ice cream, The Sweet Tee uses batch freezer technology and recipes and products suggested by the manufacturer. Vanderpool said the base product comes from Hiland Dairy, while vanilla and chocolate flavoring are shipped in from out-of-state.

The Sweet Tee is serving 10 flavors of ice cream, including Oreo, Butter Pecan, Strawberry and Mint Chocolate Chip.

“We are very quickly realizing that is not enough, ” said Vanderpool.

Continually adding flavors, including a test batch of Brown Bread, which was a recent customer request, The particular Sweet Tee also offers vegan options.

“It’s very difficult for people with dairy allergies to find ice cream options, so that was a big deal to me, ” she said.

Vanderpool said there isn’t anywhere else in Topeka that serves real, homemade your favorite ice cream and few options for ice cream at all in the southeast part of Topeka.

“Since Orange Leaf left, there’s been a hole with regard to ice cream, ” she said. ” We want to bring things to southeast Topeka that are affordable and open and that people see a value in and want to naturally support. ”

The Sweet Tee ice cream shop emphasizes community and family

With golf-themed décor and a community atmosphere, seating at The Sweet Tee revolves around family-style dining room tables plus outdoor seating spaces. The particular owners hope it will become a gathering space.

“Community is a big deal to us, ” Vanderpool stated. “This is a place regarding families to get out of the house and hang out for a little bit. We hope it will become a place people in the community will think of fondly. ”

In addition to creating community, The Sweet Tee is invested in giving back as well. Each month, it will donate tips for the month to a local charitable organization. So far, four local elementary schools have benefited, along with the First tee program in Topeka, which is a youth development organization that will teaches kids life skills while they learn the game of golf.

As veterans, Sarah mentioned she and her husband are  passionate about veteran suicide prevention and plan to contribute tips from  July to an organization invested in that work.

The Sweet Tee has hired 10 employees, including the four owners plus six high school-aged workers. Their own five children, ranging in age from 9 to 18 years, also are frequently behind the counter, serving customers, cleaning up  and helping to keep business running smoothly.

“This is where we live, ” said Vanderpool. “This is where our kids go to school. When we take a walk, we’re walking by our own businesses. This is our community. ”
